IELTS Introduction

The lure of foreign shores mesmerizes many. People from all walks of life want to pursue their dream of emigration. But in this world of cut-throat competition, only the best can excel.

The countries of our choice have limited intake and they want to take in only the best technical and scientific brains and those that can pass on their talent through effective communication skills. That is why they want only people who are proficient in English, the Lingua Franca of the world, to be part of their society. So, they have prescribed rigorous tests like IELTS (International English Language Testing System) to rate English proficiency of the prospective immigrants.

IELTS, the English proficiency test, consists of four parts that test your command over the four basic aspects of English Language i.e., Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Your communication skills are tested on a scale of 9. These are known as bands. The minimum band requirement differs for different countries and you need to check out the latest requirement with the respective embassies or the universities.

IELTS tests the complete range of language skills required by students and others seeking immigration to English speaking countries. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. For the Reading and Writing Modules there is an option for Academic or General Training. Those planning to undertake higher education need to take Academic Module, while those planning to migrate for work or for other purposes need to take the General Training Module.

IELTS is managed jointly by University of Cambridge E S O L Examinations, British Council, UK and IDP: IELTS Australia. Cambridge ESOL is responsible for designing the test and evaluating the aspirants, while the other two bodies administer the test through their giant networks all over the world.

Countries that recognise IELTS include UK, CANADA, NEWZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, USA and various other Commonwealth countries.

CBT IELTS: The Computer Based (IELTS) Test is available only in Academic Module and is offered only once a month. Speaking test is conducted only face to face.
